It all depends on the size of the boat. Power to weight ratio is the problem. You can have a small horsepowered boat pull you but it cannot weight so much that it unable to get your mass out of the water. ( Your body mass is a factor also) There are jetskis that can pull a wakeboarder so the HP needed can’t be that great. I have a 14 ft Aluminum boat with a 25 HP johnson engine that can pull a knee boarder no problem.

As pointed out by others, the amount of HP required depends on a number of factors – boat size, weight and aqua-planner size. A small boat, say 14 foot, will only need a smaller motor, like a 70hp. A larger boat (19ft for example) will need something more like 135hp. These examples would pull an aqauplanner out of the water, but top speed wont be very high. If you currently have a boat (with motor) that isnt performing, you may want to try a different prop, something with a different cup. A bigger cup will give more pull, but less top end. If you are only towing a wakeboarder, you only need to make 25mph ( as someone said earlier ) Propellers can be modified almost to what the boat owner is requiring. even a 50 HP, behind a 14 foot boat would be ok for a wakeboarder. Skiier/ Barefooter will need something a bit more though, minimum 70hp. Bigger the boat – bigger the HP. I know of a 17 foot with a 115hp does everything all the crew requires – ski, foot, wake board and tube. PS, older the motor – the more tired it is 70 hp isnt necessarily 70 anymore, more than likely less…..

This will depend on the length of your boat, and occupants on board. Look for boats designed for this use with a tower.
